These tec hnologies carry a potential for organizations to open up aspects of produc tion and directly involve external stakeholders. One result of this trend is an increased institutional pressure on the newspaper industry to facili tate an open approach to news production — a traditionally insular indus try currently battling a near two-decade long financial decline. This talk focuses on how the newspaper industry meets the challenge of openness. Re sults from a combination of content analysis of the websites of Sweden’s 159 standard newspapers and deep qualitative interviews in one newspaper corporation\, suggest that rather than embracing openness\, newspaper orga nizations to a large extent tend to deflect open practices by either separ ating core\, legitimizing practices from openness altogether or making ope nness non-invasive by institutionally assimilating the properties of open practices. An important reason for this carefulness is the inherent comple xity stemming from mechanisms created and triggered by conflicting institu tional logics. It seems that the process of legitimization inscribed by a particularly charged information technology — the printing press — con tinues to exert great influence on what constitutes openness in the newspa per industry.\n\nFurther information about this and other seminars in the series is available here. \n\nRegistration is not required but will be appreciated.\nIf you plan to attend the semin ar please let us know via our email. \nOr ganised by casino 168\, Department of IT Management \nDate 28 February\, 2014 \nT ime 10:00 - 12:00 \nLocation How. 60\, 4th floor \n \n\n DTEND;TZID="Romance Standard Time":20140228T120000 DTSTAMP:20131213T092051Z DTSTART;TZID="Romance Standard Time":20140228T100000 LAST-MODIFIED:20140213T081735Z LOCATION:4.01 ORGANIZER;CN="Christina Broman":mailto:cb.itm@cbs.dk PRIORITY:5 SEQUENCE:0 SUMMARY;LANGUAGE=en-gb:Seminar with Prof. Pär Ågerfalk\, Uppsala Universi ty\, Sweden TRANSP:OPAQUE UID:040000008200E00074C5B7101A82E0080000000000F2A3FFECF7CE01000000000000000 01000000007A8B96EAAB51A4EA8AD4C8AED35838E X-ALT-DESC;FMTTYPE=text/html:\n\n\n\n\n \n

\n
\ nSeminar with Professor Pär Ågerfalk\, Upssala Univeristy\, Sweden.

\nRecent years have seen an increase in the use of social information technologies that have a decentralizing effect on collaboration and co-cr eation. These technologies carry a potential for organizations to open up aspects of production and directly involve external stakeholders. One resu lt of this trend is an increased institutional pressure on the newspaper i ndustry to facilitate an open approach to news production — a traditiona lly insular industry currently battling a near two-decade long financial d ecline. This talk focuses on how the newspaper industry meets the challeng e of openness. Results from a combination of content analysis of the websi tes of Sweden’s 159 standard newspapers and deep qualitative interviews in one newspaper corporation\, suggest that rather than embracing openness \, newspaper organizations to a large extent tend to deflect open practice s by either separating core\, legitimizing practices from openness altoget her or making openness non-invasive by institutionally assimilating the pr operties of open practices. An important reason for this carefulness is th e inherent complexity stemming from mechanisms created and triggered by co nflicting institutional logics. It seems that the process of legitimizatio n inscribed by a particularly charged information technology — the print ing press — continues to exert great influence on what constitutes openn ess in the newspaper industry.
